Incorporating fun into all our programs, so our members’ stay engaged and wanting to learn more. “Edu-tainment” is the term we like to use. Not only are our members being socially engaged, they are also learning lessons, virtues and other positive attributes that will help them achieve their dreams and goals. The program sets up its members for success by also connecting them to professionals in the triangle area, who are in the field that interests them, so they can mentor them as well and help them make the right decisions. The Durham Youth Alliance primarily focuses on youth from low-income homes. The effects of teaching leadership to these youth can off-set future risky behavior such as teen pregnancy and juvenile delinquency. Not only does teaching leadership to youth become a protective factor in their life against negative factors, it also bestows the qualities that employers and colleges look for. Teaching members to lead by example and stay motivated also keeps them enrolled in school, and makes them want to achieve advanced degrees.
